Research into brave, what I found interesting:
Directors/ workers;
- There was two directors; the first Brenda Chapman who created the original concept and film story.
The second director, who replaced Brenda Chapman by Mark Andrew, who changed and developed parts of the story and character design to Merida.
Technology & technique;
- When Mark Andrew took over, he used the computer setting 'straggle' to change Media's original 'lined up and too uniformed', 'laser straight with a slight curl' hair to her final design of bouncy "wild" curls.
- Do to issues with height difference between 'Merida' and 'Bear-Elinor' (one being 5"4 and the other 9") they had to 'Sink Elinor into the floor, to fit both characters into the same shot.'
- Filmmakers recorded children whispering to create the distinct sound of the Will O’ the Wisps. They wanted something that sounded both cute and mysterious'
Using Real life as inspirations.....
-The team visited Scotland multiple of times, '“We went to the highest part of Scotland and the lowest part of Scotland—and everything had a story.'
they took inspiration from the Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis in Scotlands Outer Hebrides, they took inspiration from the weather and climate conditions..
'Production designer Steve Pilcher says that the notoriously variable Highland weather was one of the most important elements to capture in order to convey the right sense of place. “Mist, rock, ruggedness, skies that are changing all the time with the rain, snow, big patches of sunlight moving over large landscapes…That’s what has to come across.
'Early versions of Brave called for most of the movie to take place in the snow, due to the witch’s spell affecting the whole land of DunBroch. Filmmakers scrapped this idea in order to show the colors of the beautiful Scottish landscape.'
Animators had to personally learn the choreography for the film’s fight scenes. They practiced with each other until they became experts in how people move during fights.'
