Colour used to be expensive, but now a days is made sympathetically. Blues would be used for most significant colours; as these used semi precious stones to create blues.
Colours are so social constructed relationships/representations too us.
Paint technology changed styles of painting, the thickness of paint adapted art into the impressionist style and enabled people to paint quicker.
Impressionist; speed, daring, colour bright. Complimentary colours.

3 main charteristics;
Hue- blue, orange, green, pink, brown.
Value- the light/darkness on the grey scale.
intensity/ chroma/saturation - strength of colour brightness/dullness.

Theory- pure colours, practice - not pure colours.. always slightly biased.

Harmonious 
Monochromatic ; just one colour varyinhnin value
Analagous; using colours that lie next to each other on the colour wheel, use at least two, no more than five rough Sian of two primaries 

Complimentary ;  Using any two colours directly opposite each other on the colour wheel.
